Interested in Earning the APFC® Certification?

The Experience Pathway can support different professional goals. Some participants are completing the pathway to build and document experience, while others may also choose to work toward the Accredited Personal Finance Coach® certification.

The questions below explain how certification fits into the pathway, what additional requirements apply, and what to consider when deciding whether certification is right for you.

How does APFC® Certification fit into the Experience Pathway?

All participants complete the same core training, mentoring, practice, applied activities, and experience documentation included in the Fall 2026 APFC® Experience Pathway. Participants who also choose to pursue APFC® certification will complete additional credentialing requirements before the certification can be awarded.

What additional requirements apply if I pursue APFC® certification?

In addition to completing the Experience Pathway, APFC® certification candidates must complete:

  • Financial Competency Demonstration or Co-Requiste
  • 100 coaching experience hours
  • A final performance evaluation

Pursuing certification does not change the core training schedule. It adds the requirements needed to earn the APFC® credential.

When will I indicate that I am pursuing certification?

At the beginning of the pathway, you will be asked to identify whether you are:

  • Completing the APFC® Experience Pathway
  • Completing the APFC® Experience Pathway and pursuing APFC® certification
  • Still deciding whether certification is right for you

Your selection allows us to assign the appropriate course access, requirements, and completion tracking.

Can I decide to pursue APFC® certification later?

Yes. You may begin the Experience Pathway and choose to pursue APFC® certification later. You will still be responsible for completing all applicable certification requirements within the required completion period. Contact the certification team at certification@sagefinancialsolutions.org if your goal changes so your course access, records, and requirements can be updated.

What are the coaching experience requirements for certification?

APFC® certification candidates must complete 100 hours of independent coaching experience through paid or pro bono sessions with real clients.

These hours give you an opportunity to apply the skills developed throughout the training and demonstrate experience supporting clients through the coaching process.

You will have up to two years from your final individual mentor coaching session to complete the required coaching hours and final performance evaluation.

What is the financial competency requirement?

To earn the APFC® certification, participants must demonstrate financial competency. This requirement may be completed before or during the APFC® program, but documentation must be submitted before the APFC® certification is awarded.

This requirement may be met through one of the following:

  • An approved financial credential, such as AFC®, CFP®, ChFC®, CFA, CFT, or CPA
  • Completion of a certificate, certification, or degree program in personal finance, financial counseling, financial planning, financial education, accounting, economics, or a related field
  • Substantial academic coursework in personal finance, financial counseling, financial planning, financial education, accounting, economics, or a related field

The financial credentials listed above are provided as examples and are not intended to represent all credentials that may satisfy this requirement.

Documentation may include a certificate, credential verification, transcript, or other official record showing completion.

If you are unsure whether your prior education or credential applies, email certification@sagefinancialsolutions.org for review.

What is the final performance evaluation?

The final performance evaluation assesses your coaching skills using the ICF Core Competencies and applicable performance standards.

You will submit:

  • 1 Audio/Video recording of a full coaching session
  • An accompanying transcript for the submitted recording

The recordings must feature coaching sessions with real clients and meet the current submission requirements provided by Sage Financial Solutions.

What should I do if I am still deciding?

You may indicate that you are still deciding and request guidance from the Sage Financial Solutions team.

We can help you understand the certification requirements and consider whether the APFC® credential aligns with your professional goals.

Questions about certification should be directed to certification@sagefinancialsolutions.org.
